Bipolar is a debilitating disorder that is usually diagnosed in young adults. It is marked by alternating periods of unusually elevated mood and depression. The effects of bipolar disorder on young adults is well researched due to the fact that the average age of onset is around twenty-five years old, however it can be diagnosed at any age. In addition to living with the disorder, older adults with bipolar must also experience both the physical and mental consequences of the aging process. It is important to understand the disorder through the experiences of the older population in order to improve coping techniques and possible treatments for those who may find themselves struggling in the future.
